Two actors, one household, and a long-held decision to keep it out of the story.
Ava Nayla’s parents have spent their working lives in Hindi cinema and, for almost as long, have kept their home deliberately outside it. What follows is drawn from the public record of their careers and from what they have themselves chosen to say.
01 Her Father
Manoj Bajpayee
Born to a farming family in Belwa, a village in Bihar, Manoj Bajpayee moved to Delhi for university and into theatre soon after. He was turned away from the National School of Drama repeatedly before finding his footing on the Delhi stage, and arrived in Mumbai without any of the usual advantages.
Satya changed that in 1998. In the decades since he has become one of the most consistently admired actors of his generation, moving between independent cinema, mainstream film and long-form streaming work without settling into any of them.
He has won three National Film Awards — a Special Jury Award for Satya, Best Supporting Actor for Pinjar, and Best Actor for Bhonsle — and was appointed a Padma Shri in 2019.
In interviews he speaks about his daughter rarely and carefully, most often to explain why she has seen so little of his work. He has said plainly that most of his films are not age-appropriate for her, and has been content to leave it there.
02 Her Mother
Neha
Ava Nayla’s mother was born Shabana Raza and worked in films under the name Neha — a change made at the industry’s insistence rather than her own, as she has since said publicly.
She made her debut in 1998 in Kareeb, opposite Bobby Deol, and appeared in Fiza in 2000. She stepped back from acting in the years that followed.
She met Manoj Bajpayee at a film party; they were together for close to eight years before marrying in 2006. Speaking shortly after the wedding, she described a domestic life of no particular glamour — long conversations at home over tea — which is more or less how the household has been described ever since.
03 The Household
A home built on choice rather than convention.
Manoj Bajpayee and Neha married across faiths, and have spoken publicly about raising their daughter in a house where questions of belief are hers to answer for herself rather than to inherit.
It is consistent with everything else the family has said about how they run their home: few rules made in public, and a firm line around what belongs to the three of them.
On February the 23rd
Ava Nayla’s birthday falls on the same date as her parents’ wedding anniversary. In 2020 her father marked the two together in a single public post — “celebrating life” — which remains one of the few occasions the family has drawn attention to a private date at all.
